Quantum Locking

Believe it or not, here at JC/DC our interests do actually go beyond bizarre news, quality banter and a quaff of ale here and there. As such we are constantly scouring the interwebs for succulent morsels of fascinating information, the strangest of oddities and the most curious of curiosities to expand our mind and keep us going with the daily grind. This could be a thought provoking piece in 'New Scientist', or a stunning vista from a photo-blog. Or it could be a video of a cat. Not because we particularly like cats, but mostly because every second page on the ol' dubya dubya dubya is no longer pornography; it's cats. So they're bound to pop up sooner or later. And being the generous souls we are, we will endeavour to share these humorous, astounding and/or fluffy finds with you when ever we can.

The exciting video after the jump is a spectacular example of 'The Meissner Effect', or sometimes called Quantum Locking or Pinning; a combination of magnets, low temperature physics and superconductivity.

For anyone who actually enjoys science and doesn't want to believe this is some kind of unholy magic, this website offers a superb explanation of the fairly complicated physics behind the phemonemon.
