News: Round up - 24th November

This man is very excited to read this weeks weird news round up.
Welcome once again fans to the JC/DC Weird news round up.
Happily, this week we appear to have no major deaths to report. Hurrah! So this week we can get straight into the strange news stories from the all over the globe.

Despite the freedom to have an entire weeks news without a single death related story, we instead start with the story of someone mentioned in last weeks round up - Sir Jimmy Saville.

Just over a week ago, Sir Jimmy's funeral was held at Leeds Cathedral, before he was buried in Woodlands Cemetery, Scarborough. At the former DJ and presenter's request, his coffin was buried feet down at a 45 degree angle, facing the waves and beaches of the popular seaside resort.

News: Round Up - November 13th

Sir Jimmy was just one of many sad passings over the last few weeks.
Dear friends, apologies are in order. After months of absence from your lives, JC/DC return, only to go AWOL for a further 4 weeks. This was an unfortunate combination events, including but not limited to: a huge problem in our IT department (read: my computer tried to do the world a huge favour and refuse to let me post anything); a massive lack of man power brought about by an office epidemic (read: I caught an awful cold); the sheer increase in workload from other projects (read: my job that actually pays the bills suddenly required me to do some real work). Hopefully, that is all behind us now and normal service can resume.

Today is Remembrance Sunday. Please remember all those that have given their lives, friend or foe, in the many conflicts that have occurred all over the globe, throughout history and today.

Guest Post: Time to Grow Up, Lewis

Who is the most talented driver in Formula One? Not who has the most points or podiums, but who actually has the most natural talent?

It is not Sebastian Vettel, nor is it Fernando Alonso – the driver with the greatest raw ability is undoubtedly Lewis Hamilton, the 2008 World Champion.

Hamilton was the 2008 World Champion
Former greats of the sport like Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart all agree, and until recently Hamilton’s daredevil overtakes and electric pace have always made him the most exciting driver to watch.

But this year has seen the wheels fall off Hamilton’s campaign – literally, in some cases. He lies fifth in the championship with two races to go, and it cannot all be blamed on the car.

Jenson Button, Hamilton’s McLaren-Mercedes team mate, is currently second in the drivers’ standings, 38 points ahead of Hamilton. Despite having the same car, Hamilton has been consistently outperformed by the only person against whom he can be accurately measured.

Quantum Locking

Believe it or not, here at JC/DC our interests do actually go beyond bizarre news, quality banter and a quaff of ale here and there. As such we are constantly scouring the interwebs for succulent morsels of fascinating information, the strangest of oddities and the most curious of curiosities to expand our mind and keep us going with the daily grind. This could be a thought provoking piece in 'New Scientist', or a stunning vista from a photo-blog. Or it could be a video of a cat. Not because we particularly like cats, but mostly because every second page on the ol' dubya dubya dubya is no longer pornography; it's cats. So they're bound to pop up sooner or later. And being the generous souls we are, we will endeavour to share these humorous, astounding and/or fluffy finds with you when ever we can.

The exciting video after the jump is a spectacular example of 'The Meissner Effect', or sometimes called Quantum Locking or Pinning; a combination of magnets, low temperature physics and superconductivity.

News: Round Up - 16th October

Seattle Superman, Phoenix Jones, talks to the press.

This week, we start odd journey round the globe in Seattle, where would be superhero 'Phoenix Jones' is in court over accusations that he assaulted 4 people leaving a nightclub. In a scenario echoing the plot line from "The Incredibles", Pheonix Jones supposedly attacked the revellers in an attempt to break up a fight.

"I am just like everybody else. The only difference is that I try to stop crime in my neighbourhood." said the real life superman, who is leader of the Rain City Superhero Movement, and claims his team will be out patrolling Seattle's streets the same night of his court appearance.

Steve Jobs:  1955-2011
Welcome fans to your weekly round up of stories from the last 7 days. The main story of the week was the sad news of the death of Apple Co-founder and Chairman, Steve Jobs, on Wednesday. It is a testament to Apple's current popularity that people were so aware of who he was and were saddened by his death, something that may not have been true 20 years ago when Apple were struggling and Jobs was at his new company,  NeXT Computer Inc. He will always be remembered as the man who brought the iMac, iPod and iPhone to the world, when he returned to the company in 1996. He should also be remembered for the brilliant work he did helping to turn Pixar into the fantastic film producing studio it is today. Anyway enough with this depressing stuff, here at JC/DC we aim to brighten up your week, rather than darken it like all these "Real" news outlets tend to do. So on to the weird news!
